Salfords is a village in the borough of Reigate and Banstead in Surrey, England. It lies approximately 3 miles or 5 km south of Redhill on the A23 London to Brighton road. It was the original UK home of the Monotype Corporation and the railway station was originally built to service the corporation. The village lies within the "Salfords and Sidlow" parish which has a population of 3,069. Etymology of place-name

Salfords means "willow-tree ford" from Old English "sealh"/"salh" "willow" and "ford" "ford. The name was recorded as "Selefrid" in 1193. This is similar to the Salford, Greater Manchester. The "-s" was added fairly recently.Fact|date=May 2008

Description

The village has its own church, primary school [ [http://www.salfords.surrey.sch.uk Salfords Primary School] ] , cricket club [ [http://www.salfordscc.co.uk/jambla/ Salfords cricket club] ] , some shops, cafes, a social club, a tanning salon and a number of restaurants. Salfords Stream runs through the village and can cause flooding in the autumn and winter months. Salfords made the national news in January 2008 when a farmer named Robert Fidler built a personal home similar in style to a Tudor castle and disguised it with hay bales and tarpaulin for four years in an attempt to avoid planning permission from Surrey County Council.
