Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) are a group of neuropathies which are characterized by their impact upon both afferent and efferent neural communication.

They are more common than hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies.cite journal |author=Houlden H, Blake J, Reilly MM |title=Hereditary sensory neuropathies |journal=Curr. Opin. Neurol. |volume=17 |issue=5 |pages=569–77 |year=2004 |month=October |pmid=15367861 |doi= |url=http://meta.wkhealth.com/pt/pt-core/template-journal/lwwgateway/media/landingpage.htm?issn=1350-7540&volume=17&issue=5&spage=569]

Types

In 1968, it was classified from groups I to VII:cite web |url=http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/TOPIC468.HTM |title=eMedicine - Charcot-Marie-Tooth and Other Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathies : Article by Aamir Hashmat |format= |work= |accessdate=] cite journal |author=Dyck PJ, Lambert EH |title=Lower motor and primary sensory neuron diseases with peroneal muscular atrophy. HMSN is sometimes equated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.cite journal |author=Horacek O, Mazanec R, Morris CE, Kobesova A |title=Spinal deformities in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy: a retrospective qualitative, quantitative, genotypical, and familial analysis of 175 patients |journal=Spine |volume=32 |issue=22 |pages=2502–8 |year=2007 |month=October |pmid=18090092 |doi=10.1097/BRS.0b013e3181573d4e |url=http://meta.wkhealth.com/pt/pt-core/template-journal/lwwgateway/media/landingpage.htm?an=00007632-200710150-00017] cite journal |author=Bertorini T, Narayanaswami P, Rashed H |title=Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (hereditary motor sensory neuropathies) and hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies |journal=Neurologist |volume=10 |issue=6 |pages=327–37 |year=2004 |month=November |pmid=15518599 |doi=10.1097/01.nrl.0000145596.38640.27 |url=]
