"Blue Jean Magazine", founded by Sherry Handel was "the only magazine written by teen girls from around the world". Blue Jean was dubbed "The Thinking Girls' Magazine by USA Today. It was founded in 1995 and published in the United States from 1996 to 1998. The magazine was notable for publishing no advertisements and for being an alternative to glamour and beauty magazines targeting teen girls. The best of Blue Jean Magazine was compiled into a book, Blue Jean: What Young Women are Thinking, Saying, and Doing (Blue Jean Press, 2001), which is now used in many schools and feminist studies programs across the United States.

Blue Jean was also published as an Internet website destination at Blue Jean Online, http://www.bluejeanonline.com, from 1999 to 2004. Articles and reviews from the website were republished in newspapers across the U.S. from 2001-2004. The founder, publisher and editor-in-chief of the print magazine, content website and the Blue Jean book was Sherry Handel, a publishing consultant and speaker. Handel gives Teens Get Published (www.teensgetpublished) workshops at libraries across America. YA Librarian s rave about Sherry's ability to be "down to earth", while conveying the realities of the challenges that young adults face in trying to get their works published. Sherry Handel is also the Director for the Center for Women & Enterprise - Central Massachusetts.
