Langota

Langota

Langota is ancient underwear for men.

The langota was probably designed by Indian yogis some thousands of years ago. It is designed to keep the penis pointing upwards, and to keep both the penis and the scrotum held tightly against the body. This serves to minimize risk of injury or hydrocele and to minimize friction with the thighs.

Due to too much leaping about without wearing a kaopiina (laun̂got́a), a tight-fitting kind of underwear, or due to a sudden blow, the testes, along with their supporting ligaments and their blood vessels, may get swollen. This results in enlargement of the testicles and allows accumulation of fluids in them to form a hydrocele. [Shrii Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, "Yogic Treatments and Natural Remedies" (Anandanagar, India: Ananda Marga Publications, 1958), "Hydrocele" chapter]

Users say that a langota makes a person feel free and comfortable in his movements and hence mentally focused. Many men who use it say that it facilitates sexual self-control.

These are some of the reasons that many yoga practitioners use the langota.
