identification_symbol=AFPCGSC BadgeThe AFP Command and General Staff College, known officially as the AFPCGSC or GSC, (Filipino: "Dalubhasaan ng Pangasiwaan at Kawanihang Heneral ng Sandatahang Lakas ng Pilipinas") ("DPKHSLP") is one the training units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. It is tasked with training future generals, as well as general and command staff, and developing doctrine, training materials and courses for the AFP.

History

The AFP Command and General Staff College (AFPCGSC) is currently located at Fort Bonifacio, near Gate Nr 2 was formally activated on 02 January 1969 pursuant to General Orders No. 215, dated 29 January 1969. The story behind the establishment of the Collegeate Institution brought about the inactivation of the Army Command and General Staff College, Air Command and General Staff College and Naval Command and Staff School. On 01 February 1969, The AFPCGSC was formally organized and provided with a command structure. From there, a nucleus staff, represented by all of major services of the AFP that includes the Philippine Constabulary, was created to further refine the curriculum to be more responsive to the ever changing needs and requirements of the AFP and to make the necessary preparations for the conduct of CGS Course Nr 1 on July. It was fully operational by 28 June 1969 upon the inactivation of the Army Command and General Staff College on that very same day. The CGS School of the other branhes of service were earlier inactivated: PAF - 08 Mar 1969 and PN-26 Mar 1969.

The first regular class for the command staff course convened on 14 July 1969 with 47 student-officers from the four major services including Royal Thai Army and a Republic of Korea Army. A month later, CGS Class Nr 2 convened with 47 students. The duration of the course was 24 to 32 weeks. Notwithstanding, both classes made a joint graduation ceremony on 21 May 1970, with President Ferdinad E Marcos gracing the occasion as the primary guest of honor at the NDCP Clubhouse. For Class Nr 1, one failed to graduate while six others followed in Class Nr 2.

By 31 December 1994, the College was again deactivated. Until then, there were 2,763 student-officers that have graduated. Thirty-nine regular classes and seventeen other classes including correspondence courses to reservist have been undertaken. The deactivation gave birth to the AFP Joint Services Command and Staff College to keep pace with the fast changing strategic environment and the current AFP modernization program. By the late 1995, the AFPCGSC transferred to the present site in Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

On 01 December 1997, AFPJSCSC was named AFP Joint Command and Staff College. After a decade long limbo what should be decided as its formal name, the AFPCGSC retained back its original title pursuant to General Orders Nr 122, dated 05 February 2004 effective 07 January 2004. Then it was finally reorganized with the intent of orchestrating the interplay of military history, doctrine development and instruction in educating selected officers in the AFP on joint and combined operations (JACO) through the conduct of the AFP Command and General Staff Course.

Mission

The primary Mission of the AFP Command and General Staff Colleges is to educate selected AFP officers for higher command and staff responsibilities, develop AFP doctrines and promote Philippine military history as part of the continuous efforts in integrating the military as an important part of creating the history of the Philippines.
