Mahmoud Safwat

Mahmoud Safwat

Mahmoud Safwat Ali (Arabic: محمود صفوت على‎) (born 16 November 1929) is an intelligence officer in the Egyptian General Intelligence and Security Service and a former gymnastics player in the Egyptian Gymnastics team competing in the Olympic Games in Finland Helsinki 1952. He was known in this tournament for his outstanding performance on the bar in the obligatory section, while performing the selective section which is much easier than the obligatory one. All the press personnel were around the bars ground to take photos of the new Olympic champion but due to the brightness of the cameras flash by the time and the Swiss coach didn’t manage to get them away of the bar ground so Mahmoud Safwat was to fall during an acrobatic highly rated spin in the air. He was rated the 125th on players in overall ranking in the Helsinki summer games.
