Greenfield is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the city of Greenfield in Franklin County, Massachusetts. The population was 13,716 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Greenfield is located at coor dms|42|35|33|N|72|35|58|W|city (42.592709, -72.599584)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²). 14.9 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (2.55%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 18,716 people, 6,117 households, and 3,119 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 922.6/km² (2,391.0/mi²). There were 6,435 housing units at an average density of 432.9/km² (1,121.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.13% White, 1.41% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.27% from other races, and 2.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.43% of the population.

There were 6,117 households out of which 25.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.4% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 49.0% were non-families. 40.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $30,939, and the median income for a family was $43,888. Males had a median income of $32,069 versus $26,045 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,108. About 12.6% of families and 15.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.7% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
