Jacques Mieses (
February 27 ,1865 , inLeipzig –February 23 , 1954 inLondon ) was a German-bornJew ishchess player and writer.He moved to
England in the 1930s to escape Nazi persecution and became the first British grandmaster in 1950. He was a dangerous attacker with a number of brilliant victories to his credit, e.g. againstFrank Marshall (Monte Carlo 1903) [http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1094553] .He also organized the master tournament of
San Sebastián 1911 and insisted that all the masters' expenses were paid.
