Ira Malaniuk (
January 29 ,1923 ,Stanyslaviv (now Ivano-FrankivskUkraine ) is an Austrian operaticcontralto of Ukrainian birth, who sang a wide range of roles fromMozart to contemporary works.She studied first in
Lviv with Adam Didur, and later inVienna with Anna Bahr-Mildenburg. She made her stage debut inGraz in 1945. She joined theZurich Opera in 1947, where she took part in the creation ofWilly Burkhard 's "Die schwarze Spinne" and sang in the local premiere ofStravinsky 's "The Rake's Progress ".In 1952, she began appearing at the
Munich State Opera and theVienna State Opera , her roles there included;Gluck 's Orfeo,Verdi 's Lady Macbeth, Judith inBela Bartok 's "Bluebeard's Castle ", etc.She appeared at
La Scala in Milan, in theRing Cycle underWilhelm Furtwangler . She also made guest appearances at theRoyal Opera House in London, theParis Opera , theMonte Carlo Opera , at theSalzburg Festival , theBayreuth Festival in roles such as Magdalene, Fricka, Brangane, Waltraute, Adelaide, Marina, etc.She also enjoyed success in Italian roles such as Dorabella, Vittelia, Azucena, Amneris, she was also active in concert and
oratorio s, often singing thealto parts inBeethoven 'sNinth Symphony andMozart 'sRequiem .Malaniuk retired from the stage in 1971, and taught at the Graz Music Conservatory.
