Fergus Crane, a nine-year-old boy living with his mother, is sent to a school that is for free. Fergus Crane would've preferred helping his mother. He is sent to school on the "Betty-Jean". There are four other children with him. Instead of learning what you usually learn in school, Fergus Crane and the others on the Betty-Jean go through pipe-like holes through the ground. Fergus Crane is an extra. Incase one of his classmates gets stuck, he goes in and gets them out. One day, the Betty-Jean goes on a "field trip", without him. He figures out that the teachers on the "Betty-Jean" were of the same crew that his father was on. The teachers are using the children to dig for fire diamonds. Using "Crane And Sons" inventions, he goes to the island and saves his friends.
