academic journal founded in1976 atSouthern University inBaton Rouge ,Louisiana . It is considered by many to be the premier African and African-American literary journal printed in theEnglish language . The publication covers arts and letters of theAfrican diaspora with original fiction and poetry, as well as critical essays, visual arts, plays, and themed issues. The editor isDr. Charles H. Rowell ofTexas A&M University . Dr. Rowell is also the founder of the journal and, to date, its only editor.The journal is published quarterly in February, May, August, and November. Its circulation is 908 and the average length of an issue is 320 pages.
