List of 2008 Sichuan earthquake aftershocks

List of 2008 Sichuan earthquake aftershocks

The following is a combined list of major aftershocks of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. (Earthquake details in the main article provides a total count of recorded aftershocks.) Aftershocks measuring 6.0 Mw or 6.0 Ms and over in either list are in bold. When the dates differ between China Standard Time (CST) and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), date in CST and time in UTC appear in italic type face.

Data sources

In this article, a "major aftershock" is one reaching or exceeding either 4.0 Moment magnitude scale (Mw) as reported by United States Geological Survey (USGS) or 4.0 Surface wave magnitude (Ms) as published by the China Earthquake Administration (CEA) and its subordinate administration in Sichuan, i.e., [http://www.eqsc.gov.cn/ Sichuan Earthquake Administration] (SCEA).

Four (4) different lists are derived from data published by the above-mentioned three government agencies.

# USGS records were retrieved at various times from an index of latest major earthquakes (>= 4.0 Mw) near Wenchuan, Sichuan.cite web| url=http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/10/105_30_eqs.php| title=Earthquake List for 10-degree Map Centered at 30°N, 105°E| publisher=USGS| date=2008-07-14 | accessdate=2008-07-14 (Note: All other USGS references on this page were originally linked from this reference. With the exception of the main quake, all other pages expire in about 7 days.)] This list uses a superscript USGS with ordinals, and the default background colour.
# CEA records are consolidated from a compiled list of major aftershocks (>= 4.0 Ms)cite web | title=汶川8.0级地震4级以上余震目录 (Roughly: Aftershocks of the M8.0 Earthquake in Wenchuan exceeding M4.) | publisher=中国地震局门户网 (China Earthquake Administration Portal, CEA) | url=http://www.cea.gov.cn/manage/html/8a8587881632fa5c0116674a018300cf/_content/08_06/13/1213320904796.html |accessdate=2008-08-09 |language=Chinese Initially, this was a copy of a partial copy of cite web | title=2008年5月12日四川汶川8.0级地震4级以上余震目录 (Roughly: List of Aftershocks of the M8.0 Earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan on 2008-5-12 exceeding M4.0) |date=2008-06-30 |publisher=中国地震信息网 (Chinese Seismic Information Network, CSI by CEA) | url=http://www.csi.ac.cn/sichuan/index080512001.htm |accessdate=2008-08-04 |language=Chinese After some downtime, the recovered original page is no longer updated after June 30. The newer copy now receives updates.] and a list of latest earthquakes in Chinacite web | title=中国地震局:震情信息 (CEA - Earthquake Information) | publisher=中国地震局门户网 (China Earthquake Administration Portal, CEA) | url=http://www.cea.gov.cn/manage/html/8a8587881632fa5c0116674a018300cf/zqxx/index.html |accessdate=2008-08-07 |language=Chinese This appears to be a permanent copy of the original list (discontinued since August 7, 2008) cite web | title=中国地震局--最新地震 (Roughly: CEA - Latest Earthquakes) |publisher=中国地震局门户网 (China Earthquake Administration Portal, CEA) | url=http://www.cea.gov.cn/viewlist.asp?classID=2 |accessdate=2008-07-17 |language=Chinese Note: Most aftershocks in the above reference can be found on this index. Entries 223-226 cannot be found in this index, however.] . The two lists are updated separately so they do not coincide all the time, but common entries have identical information. A superscript CEA with ordinals and a light blue background designate CEA reports.

* SCEA, a provincial government branch under the direction of CEA, publishes two different lists: [As of 4 August, 2008, SCEA Web site is experiencing technical difficulties. These two lists are inaccessible at this time. Individual quake reports appear intact.]

  1. a compiled list of major aftershocks (>= 4.0 Ms);cite web | title=汶川地震4级以上余震目录 (List of Aftershocks of M4 and above) |date=2008-07-18 |publisher=四川防震减灾信息网 (Sichuan Quake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Information Network, by SCEA) | url=http://www.eqsc.gov.cn/manage/html/ff808181126bebda01126bec4dd00001/wenchuanyzml/index.html |accessdate=2008-07-18 |language=Chinese ] this list uses a superscript SCEA-a with ordinals and a light yellow background; and
  2. a list of earthquakes in Sichuan equal to or greater than 3.0 Mscite web | title=地震目录 (List of Earthquakes) |publisher=四川防震减灾信息网 (Sichuan Quake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Information Network, by SCEA) | url=http://www.eqsc.gov.cn/manage/html/ff808181126bebda01126bec4dd00001/dzml/index.html |accessdate=2008-07-18 |language=Chinese C.f. cite web | title=关于“地震目录”更新的说明 (Memorandum about the new "List of Earthquakes") | date=2008-07-15 |publisher=四川防震减灾信息网 (Sichuan Quake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Information Network, by SCEA) | url=http://www.eqsc.gov.cn/manage/html/ff808181126bebda01126bec4dd00001/_content/08_07/15/1216103173209.html |accessdate=2008-07-18 |language=Chinese ] from which those greater or equal to 4.0 Ms are entered here. This list uses a superscript SCEA-b with ordinals and a light magenta background.

Major differences

* The time sequences are all different even after taken into consideration rounding errors.
* SCEA-b list has the highest time resolution, 10x over USGS and SCEA-a lists, which in turn are 60x over CEA list.
* USGS list has the highest epicentre coordination resolution, 10x over SCEA lists, which in turn are 10x over CEA list.
* CEA and SCEA report the county in which each aftershock occurred, whereas USGS only provides the province.
* USGS publishes in Mw, whereas CEA publishes in Ms. [cite web

* (Although depth of epicenters is not used in this article, it is worth noting that SCEA lists do not include depth.)

These lists can be compared closely by sorting by time sequence. Other sorting methods may also be useful. (See #Sorting examples.)

References and Notes

Sorting examples

* To sort by time sequence, sort by time first, then by date. This will bring up the closest match between the USGS sequence and the CEA sequence.
* To find out aftershocks in Wenchuan County in time sequence, sort by time first, then by date, then by place.
* To find out aftershocks in Wenchuan County in order of magnitude, sort by Mag. first, then by Place.(See visual example in .)
