Ferrandaise cattle are a breed of cattle from the

Ferrandaise cattle are red and white or sometimes black and white, with upward curving horns. They are traditionally a multipurpose breed. Cows are about 1.37 metres tall and weigh about 650 kg, and their milk production is around 3800 kg at 3,8 % fat and 3,2 % protein.
History
The local cattle have been crossed to some extent in the past with Montbéliarde and Salers cattle [ [http://www.tiho-hannover.de/einricht/zucht/eaap/descript/85.htm EEAP breed profile] ] . A herdbook was established in 1905. By the 1980s the breed had declined to near extinction with only around 200 purebred females. By 2001, with support from the national park and regional park authorities [ [http://agtr.ilri.cgiar.org/library/docs/agri01_83.pdf Food and Agriculture Organisation p26 (in French)] ] , numbers had increased to some 500 registered females, and frozen semen is held from about 26 bulls.
