The European Institute is a nonpartisan public policy organization dedicated to Transatlantic relations. The Institute was founded in 1989 and is based in Washington, DC. It regularly hosts forums, roundtable discussions, and programs with political and business leaders from the U.S. and Europe. Additionally, the Institute publishes the quarterly journal "European Affairs".

Mission and Focus

According to the Institute's website, the organization's mission is "to provide an independent forum for US and European government and corporate decision makers, officials from multilateral organizations, foreign and economic policy analysts, and expert journalists to exchange information, develop innovative policy options, and create new professional working relationships."

The Institute's programs generally fall into the following 12 categories: Defense and Security; Trade and Investment; the State of Transatlantic Relations; Financial and Monetary Affairs; Energy, Environment and Transportation; EU Enlargement and Institutional Reform; Food and Biotechnology; E-Commerce and Telecommunications; Aeronautics and Space; Transatlantic Governance; Intercultural Differences; and Humanitarian Policies.

Location

The European Institute is based in Washington, DC with offices overlooking Farragut Square at 1001 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 220.

Membership

The European Institute works closely with the European Commission and European Parliament, the US Administration and Congress, 65 multinational corporations, 27 national governments, and several multilateral organizations. It is granted Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Founding members include over 30 multinational corporations, including Bank of America, France Télécom, IBM Corporation, Lockheed Martin and Verizon. Several dozen regular corporate members include Saab International, Shell Oil and DLA Piper. Governmental members include the governments of nearly every EU member nation.

"European Affairs"

Since 2000, the European Institute has published the quarterly policy journal "European Affairs". The current issue features articles by Swedish economist Anders Åslund, former congressman Jim Kolbe, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, and former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Hunter, among others.
