Malabang is a 4th class municipality in the province of Lanao del Sur, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 33,177 people in 4,883 households.

Municipality Mayor Anwar Balindong
Mayor Anwar Balindong is the incumbent mayor of Malabang. Nevertheless, he ran as Vice Mayor in 2010. Presently, Omensalam Balindong is the newly proclaimed mayor of Malabang. They are all descendants of former mayor Sultan Amer Balindong of Malabang, which have ruled for many decades. Indeed, the descendants of the Balindong family have created a strong political dynasty not just in Malabang, but throughout the entire Lanao del Sur. Attorney Pangalian Balindong is likewise a twice elected congressman of the 2nd District, Lanao del Sur. The Balindong Family has also ruled other municipalities in Lanao.
At the time of Martial Law, the Balindong Family ran for Governor but eventually lost to their major political rival Mohammad Ali Dimaporo. The Dimaporos had ruled as Lanao's biggest political dynasty but the Balindongs eventually defeated them in the congressional race in 1995.
The Santican Family is also one of the populous family in malabang and they take also OIC mayor of malabang.. MAYOR MACOD SANTICAN became a mayor at the time of martial law he also improved malabang. His daughter, Raquela Santican was married to the son of Congressman Pangalian Balindong. And the two big families in this municipality were united. The Balindong family ruled until now.
History
In 1942, the area was occupied by Japanese Imperial forces entering Malabang, Lanao del Sur.
On May 2, 1942, the former chief justice of the Philippine Supreme Court Jose Abad Santos was killed by Japanese Imperial forces by a firing squad in Malabang, Lanao del Sur.
The year 1945 witnessed the entry of the United States & Philippine Commonwealth forces which liberated Malabang, Lanao del Sur together with Maranao guerrillas. The latter used weapons like the Maranao Kris Swords, Barong Swords and Kampilan to fight the Japanese forces in the Siege of Malabang. The Japanese Imperial forces were defeated by the victorious American and Philippine Commonwealth troops with Maranao guerrillas in the Second World War.
Proposed Capital
In 1971, Republic Act No. 6406[1], was passed to divide Lanao del Sur into two, Lanao del Sur in the west while the new one, Maranaw in the east. Maranaw was to consist of the municipalities of Bubong, Ditsaan-Ramain (including what is now Buadiposo-Buntong), Kapai, Lumba-Bayabao (including what is now Maguing), Marantao, Masiu, Mulondo, Saguiaran, Piagapo, Poona Bayabao, Tamparan, Taraka and Wao (including what is now Bumbaran), with the chartered city of Marawi serving as the new province's capital. Lanao del Sur was to retain the remaining municipalities, with Malabang serving as its new capital. However it was not realized when President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law in 1972.
