Euntaek Kim

Euntaek Kim (pronounced IPA2|'ɯntʰɛk kim) (b. September 5, 1987) is a Korean pianist and conductor who currently lives in the United States.

Early years

Euntaek Kim was born in Incheon, South Korea and started playing the violin at three. At age four he switched to piano, and at age eleven, he entered the pre-college division of Korean National University of Arts in Seoul. In 2001, He moved to New York to study with Yin Chengzong and with Jerome Lowenthal at Juilliard School’s pre-college division with a full scholarship.

Performing career

Euntaek Kim's pursuit of the instrument has brought him several solo appearances with many orchestras, including Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, KNUA Chamber Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic [http://www.lexphil.org] and Louisville Youth Orchestra. He has given recitals and chamber music concerts in numerous venues including the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, Kumho Art Hall, Steinway Hall and Benedict Music Tent at the Aspen Music Festival and School with the flutist Bonita Boyd and the violist Phillip Ying, a member of the Ying Quartet. In 2005, Euntaek Kim was selected as the artist to perform the inaugural concert with the Louisville Youth Orchestra and the Louisville Youth Choir of the First Gheens Great Expectations Series at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts [http://www.kentuckycenter.org] . As a part of the Gheens Great Expectations project, Euntaek Kim is also the main feature of a nationwide television broadcast on PBS produced by Kentucky Educational Television (KET), which include his performances, interviews, and community residency events. Also in August 2008, Euntaek Kim is invited to perform at 2008 Summergarden Contemporary Music Series hosted by Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

An ambitious enthusiast of music written after 1970, Euntaek Kim is currently in his Master's degree at Juilliard School. He hopes to continue his conducting career that started since he was 14 and is in the process of launching a professional partnership with violinist Sean Riley as a violin/piano duo.

Recognition

Euntaek Kim has won numerous international prizes, including the second prize of 2001 Oberlin International Competition and the second prize of 2002 International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. Euntaek Kim has also recently participated in the renowned 2007 Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels, Belgium.
