Lloyd Saxon Graham

Dr. Lloyd Saxon Graham has been cited as one of the fathers of chronic disease epidemiology in the United States, with particular emphasis on the role of diet in the etiology and prevention of cancer. His papers are widely cited and continue to remain historical landmarks in the field of nutritional epidemiology. He was among the first American researchers to focus on links between diet and the etiology and prevention of cancer.

Work

In 1956, after completing master's and doctoral degrees in sociology at Yale University, he returned to Buffalo, New York, the city of his birth, to teach and carry out his research as a sociologist of medicine. By the time of his retirement in 1991, he enjoyed a worldwide reputation as a leading authority on the broad subject of cancer and diet.

Notable publications

Dr. Graham is the author or coauthor of over 150 major papers, and the author of two books, including American Culture, a notable sociologic study of 1960s America.

Personal details

Dr. Graham lives in Orchard Park, New York, and remains pofessor emeritus of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University at Buffalo. He speaks German, French, Japanese and Vietnamese as a function of his intelligence service training at UC Berkeley during the Second World War.
