Belarusian public and private license plate] Belarusian vehicle registration plates are currently composed of four numbers, two letters and another number (e.g. 1234 AB-5). The two letters and the last number represents which region of Belarus the car was registered.

Vehicles owned by foreign companies use black on yellow coloured plates, and the numbers and letters would appear in a different order (e.g. M 1223).

Diplomatic series are coloured white letters on red background, and also are in a different order (e.g CD 1234-5).

History

The Soviet registration plates for Belarus would be composed of two numbers, another two numbers and two letters (e.g 12 34 MББ) and would be written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Since its independence in 1992, the registration plates would have been colored red letters on a white background, and would be composed of four numbers and two letters, with the national crest in the center.

Car designations

Today, all Belarusian registration plates are written in Cyrillic letters which also appear in the Latin alphabet.

On the current Belarusian registration plates, the first letters represent where the car was registered, as well as the last number*.
*1 - Brest
*2 - Vitebsk
*3 - Gomel
*4 - Grodno
*5 - Minsk (region)
*6 - Mogilev
*7 - Minsk (city)

with the letters, it is the first letter that represents the region where the car was registered. With the second letter, a certain letter is chosen, the second letter may include A, B, C, E, I, K, M, H, P, O, T, X.
*A "and" I - Brest
*B - Vitebsk
*C and X - Grodno
*E - Gomel
*I - Can also represent Vitebsk, depending on the second letter.
*K "and" M - Minsk
*H - Gomel
*P "and" O - Minsk district
*T - Mogilev
*X - Can also represent Mogilev as well as Grodno, depending on the second letter.

Special plates

*D1 2345 - Diplomatic or consular corps
*K - Foreign correspondents
*M - Vehicle belonging to embassies, consulates, international organizations, banks and companies, foreign persons without citizenship. "(Note that these kind of registration plates would be black letters on yellow background)"
*Motorcycles and tractors have typically smaller registration plates.
*Trucks and lorries would have their registration order in - one letter, four numbers, another letter and one other number (e.g. A 1234A-5).
