Amounis was an Australian thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1922. He is a brown son of English-import Magpie and Loved One.

Amounis could have been a champion but he was unlucky enough to come up against the great Phar Lap in the era. A brown gelding, as a seven- and eight-year-old, had to face Phar Lap in great form, as a three- and four-year-old.

In the 1930 Warwick Stakes, he defeated Phar Lap by a short head to deprive Phar Lap of 24 successive victories. Before this race, Phar Lap had won nine consecutive races. He then went on to score another 14 wins straight.

At the end of his six-year-old days, he had 19 wins including Cox Plate in a bag but Amounis came back better than ever for his next two seasons. As a seven-year-old, he finished worse than third on just one occasion in 16 starts.

His career ended with 33 wins including 16 Group One victories, 11 seconds and 8 thirds in his 79 races.

In 2006, Amounis was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
