159 Sup Regt is a Territorial Army Unit of the Royal Logistic Corps. The Regt was formed on 1st April 2007 as a product of [http://www.army.mod.uk/ta_rebalancing/index.htm FAS] with the aim to provide the contingent component to [http://www.army.mod.uk/102brigade/6_supply_regiment_rlc.htm 6 Sup Regt] . The forming of functional sub-units into a distinct group was a deliberate Corps policy, which has provided a geographic span of command challenge.
The Regt is formed of one sub-unit from the Scottish Tpt Regt and one Sqn from 150 (Yorkshire) Tpt Regt and two Sqns from Welsh Tpt Regt. A newly established RHQ and future established HQ Sqn and Med Sup Sqn, are being phased in during 2008-2010. When fully formed, the all-up strength will be 623, making it one of the largest units in the British Army. The Sqns are spread far and wide and can boast a variety of accents including Black Country, Brummie, Geordie and Glaswegian. The Regimental ethos is based on the Barbarians Rugby team colours to remind all ranks that this Regt has been built with specific skill requirements in order to deliver a unique logistic capability to the Corps.
History of the Regimental Badge
The badge of 159 Sup Regt was designed around the concept that it needed to be instantly recognisable and follow established martial insignia conventions i.e. it would look like a military badge.
The geographic spread of the Unit results in a diversified cultural mix and this spread determines that the opportunities to train as a Regt are rare. As a consequence, the Unit is similar in its makeup and ethos as the Barbarians Rugby Football Club and the chosen background colours of black and white are those of the ‘Barbarians’.
The numbering of the Regt is a simple 159 in Roman numerals, a design concept used by the British in martial insignia since the formation of the New Model Army. The numerals sit inside a dominant V, which clearly denotes the ‘Volunteer’ status of the Regt.
