Bakti Negara (also Bhakti Negara) is a Pencak Silat style, primarily focused in self-defense practiced in almost every town and village in Bali by both men and women.

Bakti Negara has some unique differences to other styles practiced throughout South East Asia. Bali has a 94% hindu population whereas in the rest of Indonesia Islam is the majority. It is in this context that Silat in Bali has its distinct look and philosophy.

History

"Bakti Negara" was officially created on 31 January 1955 in Banjar Kaliungu Kaja, Denpasar, Bali by four pendekars who were veterans of the struggle against the Dutch for Indonesian freedom: Anak Agung Rai Tokir, I Bagus Made Rai Keplag, Anak Agung Meranggi, Sri Empu Dwi Tantra, and Ida Bagus Oka Dewangkara who was given the task of leading and managing Bakti Negara.

After 1968 there was a period of further development of Bakti Negara and transition from the old generation to a new one, especially I Bagus Alit Dira aided by I Made Mangkling, I Wayan Tambir, I Bagus Made Suenda, I Made Wirasana, I Made Dana, I Made Mariatha, Suhaemi, Anak Agung Ngurah Manik Astawa and other pendekars. The "Lembaga Dewan Pendekar Bakti Negara" gave mandate to I Bagus Alit Dira with help by other pendekars to systematize the techniques and instruction of Bakti Negara. Some movements reveal the influence of the artistic culture of Bali, like Barong dance, Oleg, Baris Tumbak, Gebug Ende and others. Throught a process of standardization and acculturation, Bakti Negara became an integral part of Banjar or village social organisation (seka), and entered the Balinese school system. The Bakti Negara style is firmly rooted in the hindu beliefs and philosophy, and is very much self-defence oriented, but it also participates in modern Pencak Silat events and competitions where its members have achieved some important victories in many regional, national and international tournaments.
