The Seamen's Church Institute is a national historical site and organization located at 18 Market Square in Newport, Rhode Island. The insitute is designed to serve all sea farers including fisherman, sailors, naval personnel, and yachtsmen.
The Church Institute was built by Edith and Maude Wetmore, daughters of Governor and Senator George Peabody Wetmore (owner of Chateau Sur Mer). The building contains an ornately painted chapel, as well as a small library, a restaurant, and laundry rooms. Recently a company that trains and certifies captains moved into the top floor. The building was added to the National Historical Register in 1983.
