Elizabeth Sutherland, 24th Countess of Sutherland

Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland, 24th Countess of Sutherland (born 30 March 1921) is a British peeress.

Early life

The Countess of Sutherland is the daughter of Alastair St. Clair Leveson-Gower (1890–1921) and Elizabeth Helene Gardner Demarest (1892–1931), the daughter of Warren G. and Charlotte Demarest of New York City. Her father died while taking part in a big game expedition in Rhodesia, contracting malaria and dying there on April 28, 1921, aged 31.

A decade later, his widow married Baron George Osten Driesen, on June 14, 1931; she lived only three months therafter. Elizabeth then became a ward of her uncle, George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland. Upon his death, she succeeded in her own right as 24th Countess of Sutherland and Baroness of Strathnaver.

Marriage

Lady Sutherland, then Elizabeth Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, married Charles Noel Jansen on 5 January 1946.

The couple have four children:

* Alistair Charles St. Clair Sutherland; later Lord Strathnaver (born 7 January 1947).
* Martin Dearman Sutherland; later The Hon. Martin Sutherland (born 7 January 1947).
* Annabel Elizabeth Helene Sutherland; later Lady Annabel Sutherland (born 16 May 1952).
* Matthew Peter Demarest Sutherland; later The Hon. Matthew Sutherland (8 April 1955 – 5 December 1969).
