Patrick Soon-Shiong

Patrick Soon-Shiong

Patrick Soon-Shiong (b. 1952) is a South African-American surgeon and founder, chairman, and CEO of Abraxis BioScience, a biotechnology company developing cancer treatment.

Early Life

Soon-Shiong was born in South Africa to Chinese parents, who fled from China during World War II. He graduated from University of Witwatersrand with a medical degree, finishing fourth out of 189.

Career

On July 7, 2008 it was reported that Soon-Shiong, who owns more than 80 percent of American Pharmaceutical Partners (APP), agreed to sell his stake to Fresenius SE for 3.7 billion US dollars. He left UCLA in 1991 to start VivoRx, a diabetes research firm. Forbes estimates his fortune is $3.5 billion, ranking him #307 among billionaires.
