Portland, Oregon , USA. At a height of 509 feet (155 meters), it is Oregon's third tallest building. It was designed by the firm of Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership and opened in 1984 at a cost of $48 million. [Designs as varied as uses of city's newer buildings. "The Oregonian ",February 19 1990 .]There are three distinct uses for the KOIN Center, all hosted in separate parts of the building. Offices for
CBS Radio and the studios ofKUPL &KLTH (K-Hits) and "Lucy's" apparel headquarters are located on the lower floors, and condominiums occupy the top section of the building. The rest of the space is devoted to the studio, media production, and broadcast facilities for Portland'sCBS affiliateKOIN , broadcasting on channel 6. Radio stations also use the building's facilities. The distinctive spire crowning on the building houses the equipment used for broadcasting radio and television signals. The KOIN Center was controversial while being constructed because its location blocked the view of
Mount Hood as drivers exit theVista Ridge Tunnel under Portland'sWest Hills going eastbound on U.S. Route 26. [King, Bart (2006). "An Architectural Guidebook to Portland", 2nd ed., Corvallis: Oregon State University Press, p. 106.]The building was sold on
July 3 ,2007 , to a group of California investors for $108 million. [cite news| title = Calif. group buys KOIN Center | work =The Oregonian | date =July 4 ,2007 | url = http://www.oregonlive.com/business/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/business/118351952263960.xml&coll=7 | accessdate = 2007-07-04]ee also
