In the late
XVI century the city ofBergamo and its surronding areas were part of theRepublic of Venice and Valtellina was part of theGrisons . In the late years of the century the Republic of Venice decided to built a new road, that without crossing theDuchy of Milan , can create a new road ties between the Grisons and the Republic.So the paved road of Passo San Marco was built.Close to the pass at 1830 m above the sea level there is "Ca San Marco" an house also built in the late XVI century to provide care to the traveler also during winter time.In the years after theWorld War II a new road has been built.TheGiro d'Italia climbs Passo San Marco during the 2007 edition.References
