Palisades del Rey was originally constructed in the 1920s. In the 1960s and 1970s, the area was acquired by the city in a series of eminent domain purchases and all the properties were demolished. It is now the protected habitat for the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly.

The beach to the west of the area is Dockweiler State Beach.
