Durand-Hedden House and Garden

The Durand-Hedden House and Garden is a historical landmark located in Maplewood, New Jersey. It is a circa 1730 historical landmark that showcases an award-winning herb garden that includes one of the largest Herb collections in the Northeast. The first owner and occupant was Obadiah Hedden and the most renowned residents were Henry Durand and Asher B. Durand. In 1977 the Township of Maplewood purchased the home and coined the name Durand-Hedden. Over the years, the Township of Maplewood has begun to restore the house to its former grandeur. Volunteer docents can often be seen entertaining schoolchildren in the kitchen of the house by showing them how to churn butter and prepare meals in the fireplace. The Volunteer Docents also conduct tours displaying what it was like to live during the 1700’s.
