Koritnice

The village of Koritnice lies near Knežak if you are heading towards Mt. Mašun which is well known for its gorgeous forests and fresh air. Koritnice is an orderly village as all the houses are along the roads. Interestingly, all the houses which are above the main road have their doors turned downwards facing the road, all houses that lie below the road have their entrances turned parallel to the road in the direction of Knežak. In the centre of the village stands the church of St. Anton and above the village is the very old pilgrimage church of St. Hieronim. An old story says that the village got its name from the old drinking troughs (koritih) that were out on the pastureland on which farmers grazed their cattle. The village consists of around 80 houses; however, half of these are empty. There is also a fire station in the village. The majority of people are employed in ‘Stolarni Javor’ a factory in Bač, others in neighbouring towns. Some villagers engage in farming; however, the number of these is declining. The majority of the residents are adults, with only a few young inhabitants attending primary school in Knežak, junior high school in Postojna or Ilirska Bistrica, or living and attending educational facilities in Ljubljana during the week. The future of Koritnice is unknown, as is the future of ‘all’ unknown.
