Vanessa Marigold Abrams is a fictional character in the book series "Gossip Girl". She is portrayed by Jessica Szohr in the TV series.

Book series background

Described as being sullen, with a shaved head and wearing nothing but black attire, Vanessa is a budding filmmaker. Her dream is to one day attend NYU and major in film. Her hippie artist parents live in Vermont but allowed her to move to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to live with her sister, Ruby. She attends Constance Billard School for Girls where she is a social outcast.

TV series background

Vanessa is an aspiring filmmaker. Her childhood best friend is Dan Humphrey, and for a while the two had crushes on each other. They were almost an item before Vanessa decided to move away to Vermont to live with her parents. A year later, she returned to Brooklyn to live with her sister, to to and try to rekindle the old flames. Unfortunately for her, Dan has found a new love interest in Upper East Side socialite Serena van der Woodsen.

eason 1

One day, Vanessa called to ask Dan to a book, he tells you have not seen for a long time and it called for a book, Vanessa tells him to look out the window and Dan look for Vanessa located there. Vanessa returned to Vermont to live in the house of his sister.

Vanessa's intention to have a good time, go out and laugh with Dan. They plan to go to the movies in the afternoon, but Dan said that he still is in a relationship with Serena

Later, Dan who was angry with Serena, learns that another will come to masquerade ball,, so it decides to go and settle their scared. Vanessa, already at the home of Dan, you receive a call from this one, which he said he had to study for a test and canceled the trip to the cinema. Then, Vanessa helps Jenny to enter the masquerade ball, by the back door. Vanessa returns to the place that he forgot to Jenny keys. Enter the party and start searching for Jenny, not knowing that Dan is there, too. Dan and Serena discussed, but suddenly Dan kisses Serena, and Vanessa sees them. But, Dan they will still telling that the Serena is his girlfriend. Vanessa tells him she loves him and that he had come to declare his feelings, so sad that Vanessa is underway. Upon arriving at the house, Dan meets Vanessa in her room, she says they can go back to make friends and to tell you more about his new girlfriend, Serena.

Another day, Dan and Serena are increasingly enamored, so you decide to make love in the home of Dan. Vanessa suddenly goes out the window, causing an uproar. Vanessa wants to spend time with Dan, but it is in their relationship. Vanessa, then gives you the idea to bring Jenny returned to her mother's house.

On the day of Blair's birthday, Dan invited Vanessa to the party, with the intention that with Serena will find study more. Upon arrival, Serena does not have much encouragement to see Vanessa, but ultimately end up talking like real friends. On Christmas day, Vanessa is giving away a letter to Dan, which he said he could publish his book in newspapers in New York. Dan happy he is very grateful to Vanessa. Later, Serena goes to Vanessa, as they can not find a perfect gift for Dan. He said that the only thing he wants is snow, but Vanessa has an idea.

They are found at the home of Blair and Vanessa does snow, on the computer. Blair is about to Vanessa and tells her he knows she is in love with Dan and that someone is watching. Vanessa goes on a mad house of Blair. In the night, Vanessa you install snow in a romantic room and Serena thanks you.

Another day, Serena invites Dan and Vanessa to the swimming pool of college. Later Vanessa began to record Chuck and Blair, who discussed their adventure. Blair said he would hand over the tape, but Vanessa does not agree. The next day, Chuck offers money for Vanessa to deliver the tape, Vanessa will surrender and accept the money, but gives another tape.

Vanessa gives the real tape to Blair, and the latter pays all the rent of his house.

During SAT examinations, she tutors Dan. Nate went to Brooklyn to give SAT preparation books to Dan. Vanessa said Dan doesn't need the books. She thinks she's a pretty good tutor for Dan. She got the practice essay Nate had written and called Nate to say sorry for she has misjudged him. They were hanging out and Nate gave her a kiss. The following morning was SAT test day. Nate picked her up for the SAT. She doesn't take SAT because her family hasn't taken SAT and are artists. Nate made her go and at the end of the test, she was seen going out with Nate by Dan Humphrey and Blair Waldorf.

The next two weeks, she was still going out with Nate. Nate had finally asked her on a date. After Serena told Nate, Chuck and Blair about Georgina/Sarah, Nate called Vanessa and said he will be a little late for the concert because he's taking the subway. Vanessa said Sarah and Dan would be there and that alerted Nate and Nate told her who Sarah really is. Vanessa confronted Sarah/Georgina and also told Dan about it. She was also Rufus Humphrey's "assistant" during the concert.

At the Bass/van der Woodsen wedding it is seen that Blair is bitter towards Vanessa for dating Nate. Though eventually their relationship goes to an end not long after for quite clouded reasons.

eason 2

Vanessa spends the summer redecorating Rufus's art gallery and making it into a cafe. She hangs out with Nate, and he confides in her the financial circumstances of his father's debts. Just when it seems they are getting closer to each other, Nate is forced to sleep with Catherine in order for her to help him financially.

Vanessa does not find out about the existence of their relationship until she shows up to Blair's party during the city blackout. She is hurt and disgusted but promises to stay if Nate tells her everything. He does, and later he goes off to find Catherine to call off their relationship. She waits for him but Catherine finds her first and tells her just how far she is willing to go to keep Nate. She says if Nate leaves her she will report to the police the location of Nate's father. Unable to do anything Vanessa surrenders.

Later she tells Dan what happened, and she runs to him again when she captures a photo on her cellphone of Catherine and Marcus and frets over what to do with it. Acting on Dan's advice, she skeptically goes to Blair for her to form a plan to bail Nate out of Catherine's grasp. When she contacts Blair later she does not pick up her phone. From Jenny she learns where Blair is but upon seeing her at a cafe with Marcus she decides to take matters into her own hands and go to Catherine's husband and spill the beans. She learns the consequences of her actions when Blair angrily tells her she was going to have Catherine pay off Nate's father's debts until Vanessa went to Catherine's husband, and also when Nate is hurt that she not only lied to him but she went to Dan and Blair for help and not him.

Differences between book and TV series

*In the book series, she has a shaved head, wears all black attire, and is slightly overweight; in the TV series she is curly-haired, tall, and slender.
*In the TV series, Vanessa is an aspiring filmmaker and hopes to attend NYU; in the books little is mentioned of her personal life and interests.
*In the book series, Vanessa loses her virginity to a guy who works at the club her sister Ruby plays at; they also dated briefly. In the TV series she has a fling with Nate Archibald.
*At the start of the book series, she is in love with Dan who largely ignores her because he's with Serena van der Woodsen. Dan doesn't see Vanessa in a romantic light until about halfway through the book series.
*In the book series, Vanessa's sister Ruby is a prominent character; in the TV series Ruby is only briefly mentioned as being in a lesbian punk band.
