- Carl E. Heiles
Carl Eugene Heiles (born 1939) is an American
astrophysicist noted for his contribution to the understanding of diffuse interstellarmatter through observationalradio astronomy .Biography
Heiles was born in Toledo,
Ohio . [cite web | url=http://astro.berkeley.edu/people/faculty/heiles.html | title=Carl Heiles, Professor, Berkeley Astronomy Department | accessdate=2008-05-02] He did his undergraduate work atCornell University , receiving a degree inengineering physics , and then received hisdoctorate in 1966 fromPrinceton University in astrophysical sciences. He has worked at theUniversity of California, Berkeley since, and is currently aprofessor ofastronomy .Research
Much of Heiles' work has been in studying the diffuse
gas in the interstellar medium, primarily through observation of thehydrogen line . His role in this field was such that a conference atArecibo Observatory inPuerto Rico on diffuse matter was held in honor of Heiles' 65th birthday.
