"L.I.F.E." was the intended fourth single from Lil Mama's debut album, "VYP (Voice of the Young People)", but it was replaced by "What It Is (Strike a Pose)". The song is about Lil Mama's family and neighborhood surroundings before getting a record deal. Lil Mama has been praised for intelligent diversity in her music namely this single.

Music video

The music video premiered on April 30, 2008 on "Yahoo! Music" and BET's "Access Granted". The video then premiered on BET's "106 & Park" countdown the next day. The video (directed by R. Malcolm Jones) features Lil Mama playing two different characters: a foster child, a teenage mother with an abusive teenage boyfriend.
