Helsinki-Vantaa Airport Airport codes|HEL|EFHK in Vantaa, Finland, is the main airport of the Helsinki metropolitan region and the whole of Finland. It is located about 5 kilometres from the center of Vantaa, Tikkurila, and 15 kilometres from the Helsinki city centre. Originally built for the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, the airport served 13,090,744 passengers in 2007 (7.8% growth since 2006) [http://www.finavia.fi/files/finavia/matkustajat_pdf/0_INET_joulu_matk_lentoasemittain.pdf] and it is the fourth largest airport in the Nordic countries.

The airport is operated by the semi-private airport company Finavia. Helsinki-Vantaa was chosen the best airport in the world in the IATA 1999 survey on the topic. In 2006 global airport customer satisfaction survey AETRA ranked Helsinki-Vantaa one of the best airports worldwide and according to Association of European Airlines 2005 delay rates, Helsinki-Vantaa was the most punctual airport in Europe.

The airport's 3 runways are enough for large future growth and the airport can accommodate extra-wide aircraft such as A340 and the A350, which is scheduled to enter service at Helsinki-Vantaa with Finnair in the coming decade. Helsinki-Vantaa is the international and domestic hub for Finnair, the Finnish flag carrier. It is also the hub for Blue1, the Finnish regional division of SAS.

The Aviapolis is a new international business park adjacent to Helsinki-Vantaa airport area and many companies already have operations around the airport. A train link, Kehärata, to Helsinki center is planned. The Finnish Aviation Museum is located adjacent to the airport. [ [http://www.suomenilmailumuseo.fi/en/index.html Welcome to the Finnish Aviation Museum! - The Finnish Aviation Museum ] ] Several hotels are located near the airport.

Terminals

The International and Domestic terminals are 250 m apart and are linked by an internal pedestrian connection both airside and landside. However, the airside parts of the terminal buildings are under one roof and that space is not divided into domestic and international but to Schengen and non-Schengen areas. The non-Schengen area is under enlargement and will be ready in 2009, allowing the airport to receive eight wide-body aircraft at the same time compared to current 5 gates (of which only 2 are suitable for Finnair's new Airbus A340).

Ground transportation

Helsinki-Vantaa airport is located about 20 kilometres from Helsinki city centre. Bus service to centre takes 30-45 minutes depending on the time of day. The quickest bus to the centre is the Finnair bus, or with city transport, the [http://aikataulut.ytv.fi/linjat/en/s615.html 615] . Bus route [http://aikataulut.ytv.fi/linjat/en/v61.html 61] takes you to Tikkurila train station, which provides many routes for a quick and comfortable journey to Helsinki by train. The construction of the Kehärata rail link to airport is scheduled to start in 2009, with opening scheduled for 2013. [ [http://keharata.net/english/actions_in_preparation.htm Ring Rail Line ] ]
