He was the third husband of Mary Astor from 1936 to 1941. He was born in Mexico City and died in England. In her 1959 autobiography, Mary Astor suggested that "Mike", as she called him, was her only real love of her life, and that he broke her heart when he left her.

He was born as Manuel Martinez del Campo, but he changed it because he thought it was a more professional name, as he was planning to become an actor.[citation needed]

He was son of Manuel Martinez del Campo, OBE a Mexican diplomat.
