Autoignition=Selamectin is the active ingredient in the prescription drug Revolution (manufactured by Pfizer Canada . topical insecticide andantihelminthic used ondogs andcats . It controls outbreaks offlea s,heartworm ,hookworm s,roundworm s, andear mite s. Selamectin is not approved for human use.How it works
Selamectin disables
parasites by replacingglutamate in theirmuscle synapses ; glutamate is theamino acid which normally interacts with the receptors that openchloride channels into the muscle. Selamectin interferes with this process; it activates the chloride current without desensitization, allowing chloride ions to enter the nerve cells and causing neuromuscularparalysis , impairedmuscular contraction , and eventual death.Selamectin fights both internal and surface parasitic
infection . Absorbed into the body through the skin andhair follicles , it travels through the bloodstream, intestines, andsebaceous glands ; parasites ingest the drug when they feed on the animal's blood.A 2003 report by E. Pipano in the Israel Journal of Veterinary Medicine describes the testing of Selamectin for safety and effectiveness, and the positive results [ cite journal|title=RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CONTROL OF ECTOPARASITES AND ENDOPARASITES OF DOGS AND CATS WITH SELAMECTIN|journal=Israel Journal of Veterianry Medicine|date=2003|first=E.|last=Pipano|coauthors=|volume=58|issue=2-3|pages=|id= |url=http://www.isrvma.org/article/58_2_1.htm|format=|accessdate=2008-07-05 ] .
