Harry S. Laforme

Harry S. Laforme is a judge at the Ontario Court of Appeal (2004) who was educated at Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in Toronto (LL.B. '77).

He was appointed Commissioner of the Indian Commission of Ontario in 1989 and then Chief Commissioner of the Federal Indian Claims Commission from 1992 to 1994. During his law practice he was known for excelling in constitutional law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He has been a legal advocate in such places as Geneva, Switzerland as well as the British Parliament.

He is currently the Chair of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission regarding Aboriginal peoples.

He is the only Aboriginal lawyer to ever be appointed to an appellate court in Canada.
