Areopoli (Greek: Αρεόπολη) is the second largest town in Mani. The word "areopoli" means "city of
Ares ", the ancient Greekgod ofwar . It is the seat ofOitylo municipality as well asOitylo Province . However, Areopoli was not always the name of the city. Tsimova was Areopoli's first name. TheGreek War of Independence was started at Areopoli on the 17th of March 1821 byPetros Mavromichalis , the bey of Mani.
