Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) is an
organization dedicated totraining and nurturing the young leaders of tomorrow. Its mission is to provide lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower youth to achieve their highest potential.History
Founded in
1958 by American actorHugh O'Brian , the first seminar was held inLos Angeles ,California , and was held once a year until1967 . Since then, the HOBY program has spread to over 70 locations in all fiftyUnited States , and 16 countries, includingCanada ,Dominican Republic ,Ecuador ,Ethiopia ,Germany ,Hong Kong ,Lebanon ,Malawi ,Philippines ,Singapore ,United Kingdom ,Mexico ,Israel ,China ,Taiwan ,Argentina ,Bolivia , Korea, andIraq .Program
To attend seminars in the
United States , astudent must be chosen by theirhigh school out of all students in thatschool 's class. At theseminar s, students participate in programs designed to enhance their leadership andteamwork skills. Students also meet and converse with leaders in theircommunity in fields such asvolunteerism , media,education ,philanthropy , andpolitics , among others. They also break off into groups and discuss the day and their activities, as well as their life and feelings. They also participate in energizer cheers in between panels and in any free time they have.In the summer, HOBY has a World Leadership Congress (WLC), which has been hosted in Washington, DC since 2000. The WLC is attended by hundreds of HOBY students from all over the world. Since inception, 355,000 young people have attended HOBY programs.Fact|date=August 2008

The Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award is the highest honor bestowed by HOBY, named for the man who inspired and motivated Hugh O’Brian to establish the organization in 1958. The prestigious honor is presented to individuals who have distinguished themselves through service to mankind and who have contributed significantly through leading, educating and motivating youth.
