The South Island Party is a small regionalist political party in New Zealand. It advocates South Island Independence. The party's leader is Richard Prosser, a contributor to Investigate, who has previously called for a regional Parliament for the South Island [ [http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO0707/S00284.htm Candidate calls for Southern Assembly] ] .
The party was founded on the belief that there is still substantial residual support for its predecessor [ [http://www.elections.org.nz/uploads/the_south_island_party.pdf Written submission in support of application for broadcasting funding] , Richard Prosser, 18 April 2008] . It is currently attempting to gain the 500 financial members necessary for registration so it can contest the party list in the 2008 election. It has applied to receive broadcasting funding [ [http://www.elections.org.nz/news/ec-media-broadcasting-hearings-230408.html Commission to hear parties on broadcasting time and funding] ] .
The party did not register for the 2008 election.
