His father, Joseph, an immigrant from Syria, was awarded New Mexico's first Coors beer distributorship. Taking over for his father after he suffered a heart attack in 1944, Maloof expanded into hotels, trucking and banking. After Maloof's death, his sisters sued his family to force a liquidation of their holdings.
