Tornel

Tornel o Hulera Tornel is a Mexican enterprise and only surviving tire producer in Mexico, dedicated to making tires and other automotive industry-related products. Founded in 1933 by Mexican businessman Armando Tornel, who in October 2006 entered the Worldwide Tire Industry Hall of Fame. Tornel has been consolidated, making it the Latin American tire producer, and one of the largest in the world.

First steps

Tornel was founded by Armando Tornel Murillo originally from de El Salto de Juanacatlán, Jalisco México; it entered the tire business when he was only 15 years old, while working as a tire seller at the same time he was studying in the night school of San Indelfonso in Mexico City. Years later, he went to the United States, where he studied the technical career of Tire Engineering in Smithers Laboratories, and rubber technology in Vanderbilt Laboratories, gaining practical experience at Goodyear and Mohawk, both in Akron, Ohio. When it returns, ran the 1933 years. Joined his father and together they opened a tire-sale business with 27 workers, that was located in Hidalgo Avenue number 91, on Historic Downtown.

Compañía Hulera El Centenario

Although 1937, the business was consolidated. "Compañía Hulera El Centenario" produced and marketed tires under the America and All States brands. Already in the 1940s, the company had to renew since in this decade it starts to sue more energy, supplies, personal and collective transport. Just 14 years after, it changed the name to Hulera Tornel, that produced, additionally, rubber and material for tire renew.

Born

In 1951 Hulera el Centenario changed her name to Hulera Tornel. In this name, Tornel Murillo assumed the chairmanship. Her two brothers, Raul y Salvador joined later, in other key posts. Unfortunately, of these eight children, today only Armando survives. In the 1950s the enterprise launches in other sectors and it starts making bicycle tubes but also devised new manufacturing techniques, and in 1968 it starts to make bicycle tires.

Development, growth and consolidation

In the 1970's the company started to grow dramatically, but also it starts to rivalize with other national tire companies like General Popo, Euzkadi, and the oldest of all, Hercules. On this time Tornel it starts to launch most modern products like the tire tubes that the manufacture was with point technology and additionally it incursionated on making of tire for trucks, buses and light-trucks.

Although in the 1980s brought a crisis to Mexico this due to evaluations which caused the closing of Tornel's Mexican competitors, General Popo, Euzkadi, and Hercules. When these enterpises closed, put it beards to soak and still the business together specialization in the niche sales to retail to vehicles and trucks. This movement it allows still force in the market.

With closing of these factories Tornel had a free way on the market but not for many time since later fall the foreign tire enterprises the which would the real competition. When competition came up with Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin, Firestone and BFGoodrich. However, despite the incursion of foreign companies mentioned above, the market presence and Tornel prestige was not diminished at all.

Today

Today, the enterprise bill with five factories situated on Distrito Federal, and in Tultitlán, Estado de México, with 1500 union jobs, and exporting products worldwide. Currently Don Armando Tornel it still in front to company, together with family. Also Tornel has been writted name on International Tire Industry Hall of Fame on Octubre 2006 in a ceremony on Las Vegas, Nevada.

A long-term vision

On mid-1930s, few had a vision of what, on the following year, would become on the strongest economic sectors. Armando Tornel was one of he and was left reaching for his intuition: the automotive industry grow, imparable. These is one of the factors by which the Armando Tornel Murillo business prospered in a manner incredible.

Tornel not compete mainly focused with the big international companies. It is set at one of its main operating factors: the tires. Thus, he became one of the initiators of companies manufacturing tyres stronger Mexico. At present has a strong presence felt in the market domestically and internationally.
