chemical engineer and the Regents Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at theUniversity of Minnesota . Aris was elected to theNational Academy of Engineering in 1975 and to theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988. He made significant contributions to the field ofcontrol theory , for which he received theRichard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award in 1992.During his lifetime, Rutherford Aris published 13 books and more than 300 research articles, and mentored more than 65 M.S. and Ph.D. students.
