SPS "Santa María" (F81) is the lead ship of six Spanish-built
frigate s based on the USN "Oliver Hazard Perry" (FFG-7) design. Laid down onMay 22 1982 and Launched onNovember 11 1984 , Santa María was commissioned in service onOctober 12 1986 . All of these Spanish FFG's have the length of the later "Oliver Hazard Perry" FFG's, and have a wider beam than the USN design, and therefore able to carry more top weight.
