The Cayman Islands National Museum is a museum in the Cayman Islands located in the Old Courts Building on Harbor Drive on Grand Cayman island. The museum is dedicated to the preservation, research and display of all aspects of the Caymanian heritage.
Although it only opened in 1990, the roots of the museum can be traced back to the 1930s when Mr. Ira Thompson began collecting Caymanian artifacts as a hobby and in 1979, the government purchased Mr. Ira's collection which forms a major part of the National Museum collection today. T
The museum contains over 4,000 items artifacts ranging from tiny coins to a 14 foot catboat. The Natural History Exhibit also has a 3 dimensional map depicting the underwater geological formations that surround the Cayman Islands [ [http://www.museum.ky/ Cayman Islands National Museum ] ] .
