Dustin Camp

Dustin Camp

Dustin Camp was a student who killed punk rocker Brian Deneke during a brawl between teenagers at the Western Plaza Shopping Center in Amarillo, Texas on December 12 1997 . Camp deliberately ran down Deneke with his Cadillac, killing him instantly, and fled. A passenger eyewitness testified that Camp exclaimed "I'm a Ninja in my Caddy!" as he targeted Deneke and then "I bet he liked that one!"cite news | url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B07EEDA173FF935A15752C1A96F958260 | title= After a Murder Trial, Amarillo Asks, 'Is This a Tolerant Place?' | publisher=New York Times | date=26 November 1999 | accessdate=2008-04-25] cite news | url=http://www.dallasobserver.com/1999-10-21/news/anarchy-in-amarillo/ | title= Anarchy in Amarillo | publisher=Dallas Observer | date=21 October 1999 | accessdate=2008-04-25] cite book |last= Ferrell|first= Jeff |title= Tearing Down the Streets: Adventures in Urban Anarchy |publisher= Macmillan |year= 2001 |month= September |isbn= 0312233353 ] cite book |last= Smith|first= Evan |coauthors= Pamela Colloff|title= Texas Monthly on Texas True Crime |publisher= University of Texas Press |year= 2007 |month= September |isbn= 0292716753] cite news | url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B07EEDA173FF935A15752C1A96F958260 | title= Victim's dad unsurprised by sentence | publisher=Amarillo Globe News | date=02 September 1999 | accessdate=2008-04-26] after he ran over Deneke as he sped away from the scene. During Camp's murder trial the defense claimed Camp had acted in defense of a 3rd Party. The jury found Camp guilty of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced him to ten years probation. The killing attracted significant media attention and raised questions about the tolerance of Amarillo. In June 2001 Camp was busted for underage drinking and was arrested for being a minor in the possession of alcohol after someone called the police on him. The charges are part of a long list of probation violations. In September that year, Camp received an eight year prison sentence for violating his parole terms. In 2006 he was paroled under supervision because his sentence doesn't expire until 2009. cite news | url=http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl?id=2001_3332563 | title= Probation violator gets 8-year term | publisher=Houston Chronicle | date=08 September 2001 | accessdate=2008-04-25]
