Cedar is a small
unincorporated community in Solon Township, Leelanau County, in theU.S. state ofMichigan . It is at coord|44|50|52|N|85|47|45|W|. TheLeland River is navigable to Cedar. TheZIP code is 49621.Cedar, originally named "Cedar City", had its beginnings when the
Manistee and Northeastern Railroad came into the town in 1892. A mill was built for making barrel staves and hoops.In 1905, the Cedar State Bank was begun, which survived the
Great Depression in 1933, but was closed later in the decade. The bank building was later used for the offices of the Leelanau Telephone Company.In 1958, when there was talk of moving the Leelanau County seat from Leland, Cedar was nominated to be the new county seat had a vote on the proposal come up.
Each year in July, Cedar is host to the annual Cedar Polka Festival, which began in 1975. Cedar is also the hometown of Ray Pleva, of [http://www.plevasmeats.com Pleva's Meats] , creator of Plevalean and cherry pecan sausage.
