- Struther Arnott
Struther Arnott CBE, FRS, FRSE, (born
25 September ,1934 ) is a Scottish academic and was former Principal andVice-Chancellor of theUniversity of St Andrews .Educated at the
University of Glasgow , he worked with the Biophysics Unit ofKing's College London , before his appointment asProfessor ofMolecular Biology atPurdue University ,Indiana . At Purdue he served as Vice-President for Research and Dean of theGraduate School . He returned to theUnited Kingdom to serve as Principal and Vice-Chancellor at St Andrews from 1986 until his resignation in December 1999.He has held visiting fellowships at
Oxford University and is a Fellow ofKing's College London . He was appointed a Fellow ofThe Royal Society in 1985, of theRoyal Society of Edinburgh in 1988, and was made a Commander of theOrder of the British Empire in 1996.Professor Arnott has two sons: his elder son, Aaron Arnott, is employed by a bond firm in the United States. His younger son, Euan, attained his PhD at Cambridge University in chemistry and is currently designing processes for a pharmaceutical company. He also has two grandchildren.
Professor Arnott is married to Dr Greta Arnott.
