tone = April 2008The birth of St Francis De Sales School in Dhemaji is said to be very accidental. It was in 1978 one day the principal cum spiritual head of S.F.S School Dhemaji, Fr Verketh Veliadeth,a very smart and tender hearted father invited a few leading citizens of dhemaji for a tea at his residence. There he disclosed to them that he had been deputed by his provincial to start an English medium school at Dhemaji and he desired their co-operation. It was good news for all of them, as they were longing to have a school of that sort. They all whole-heartedly welcome the idea and promised of their help in every possible manner. That is why the beginning of S.F.S School took place in the year 1979.

The school started with a few children in a small Assam type building. The principal Fr. Verkey himself took the classes. The parents were very happy to see their children going to an English medium school with beautiful uniform and bags. People’s aspiration to educate their children in a good school was going to be fulfilled. The School faced many difficulties at the beginning years from the ASSU movement. The ASSU activists with the direct dictation of some figures either in the field of politics or otherwise who remain behind the screen vehemently opposed the establishment of S.F.S School at Dhemaji. The leaders of the ASSU submitted a memorandum to the then SDO(C), Dhemaji requesting him not to allow such an English medium school to locate at Dhemaji. The persons who actively participated for the establishment of the S.F.S School faced much untold difficulties that could be said beyond description.

The effort to prevent the birth of S.F.S School in Dhemaji was a failure because of various reasons. The majority of the people in Dhemaji reasonably felt the existence of an English medium school at Dhemaji is necessary to educate their children in the best manner possible. Apart from this, it was occasionally heard that the government servants posted at Dhemaji did not remain in the place because there was no good facility to educate their children. In fact, everyone felt the need of having a good English medium school and supported in best manner possible. In this connection, they all extended their helping hand to the authorities of S.F.S School and brought the institution to surface.

Under the able guidance of the principal and the tireless efforts of the staff, the school began to grow faster, in a small plot purchased from Mr. Hiralal Sharma. It has also been mention here that at the very outset, it was a headache for the authority to find students for admission as most of the parents were very much reluctant to send their wards to this newly born institution and they had to encourage many parents to send their children to this school. When the school began to grow towards prominence some people with vested interest tried to obstruct the progress on religious line. Nevertheless, they failed in those attempts because meantime majority of the parents realize that that motto of this institution is anything but to take the people to light.

Today this institution has a big campus with massive and beautiful infrastructure. Today it stands as one of the best institution in Assam for academic performance. It has four ranks and hundreds of distinction to its credit over the years in the HSLCE.The secret behind its success is nothing but the blessings of God, the supreme soul who desiring to lit a light of knowledge for its beloved children of this backward area. It has chosen His sweetest children to carry out his mission.

The institution has done manifold services to the suffering humanity over the year. Therefore, our simple realization is that this is not only an institution which renders service to the education of children. Its very foundation is based on purity, peace and love. During the time Assam Agitation in the year 1984–85 it gave shelter to riot victims with free food and medicine. During that period nobody ventured to assist the Government in bringing peace and harmony among the people but this institution directly working for peace and harmony along with Government agencies. Few years it also provided shelter to the flood-affected victims.

Lastly, nowadays when we came across this school and its beautiful students we feel proud and really enjoy its beauty and realize that the happiness of one who plants and nurtures a tree of sweet fruit is much higher than one who eats the fruits. The school has satisfactorily come across 25 years and now we sincerely appreciate the unique and tireless efforts of handful benevolent fathers, sisters and staff who have bought sweet smiles to the parents, students and supporters. In conclusion, it is our sincere hope that this institution would be continuing with the highest degree of efforts for fulfilling the expectations of those who associate with it in future.
