- Castor McCord
Castor "Cass" McCord (May 17, 1907 – February 14, 1963) was an American
jazz saxophonist. He was the twin brother of saxophonistTed McCord . McCord started out as a member ofEdgar Hayes 's Blue Grass Buddies in 1924. He then attendedWilberforce University , where he played in the student band run byHorace Henderson . Later in the 1920s he moved fromOhio toAtlantic City and then toNew York City , where he played with theMills Blue Rhythm Band andLouis Armstrong late in the 1920s. Time soon followed withEubie Blake andCharlie Matson .In the middle of the 1930s, McCord played in
France for a year and touredIndia withLeon Abbey in 1936. McCord led his own trio inAmsterdam in 1937, then worked withWalter Rains inRotterdam the next year. He moved back to New York near the end of the decade, returning to play under Abbey before joining the bands ofBenny Carter ,Eddie Mallory , andClaude Hopkins .In 1940, McCord left music to open a
hairdresser shop inManhattan , which he ran until his death in 1963.References
