state highway located in Sac County. Its southern terminus is east of Lake View at an intersection withU.S. Highway 71 andIowa Highway 175 . Its northern terminus is atU.S. Highway 20 east of Sac City.Route description
Iowa Highway 196 begins at an intersection with US 71 and IA 175 east of Lake View. It heads directly northward for its entire route. East of Sac City, it meets US 20 where it then terminates. The route serves as a cutoff between US 20 and US 71 / IA 175. On US 71 / IA 175, it is signed "To US 20" and on US 20, it is signed "To US 71 South". [http://www.angelfire.com/ia3/roadgeek/ia196.html End of Iowa 196] ] US 71 North is not mentioned because US 20 and US 71 meet south of Early.
History
IA 196 was designated on April 9, 1935 after US 71 was realigned; however, it did not replace any old parts of US 71. The designation of IA 196 was originally supposed to be a spur route between US 20 and Williams further to the east. The plan was for IA 196 to replace US 20 south of Williams, but this never happened despite being approved on October 28, 1930, and later scrapped on May 25, 1932.
